Observation Face

          - Firstly, I have done my observation and reported it as well. Hence, you can read the observation in the following paragraphs.

Observation:

- In the major of Bachelor in English Language section “B”, Miss. Jimenez teaches Basic English to thirty students. By this time, they have studied and finished the first unit which includes greetings, verb “To Be”, Yes/No questions, adjectives, nationalities, professions, ages, possessive form of nouns, and possessive adjectives, so they can deal with these topics now; however, Miss. Jimenez has decided to finish up the unit by recalling these topics in order to reinforce weaknesses. Since the class starts with horseshoe style, Miss. Jimenez shows an enormous enthusiasm and her passion for teaching, so that makes students get interested for the class easily.

- The class starts so cool because Miss. Jimenez knows students may be stressed, so she asks them to stand up, to come to the front, and to make a circle; then, she asks them to put their hands on their classmate´s shoulders in order to make him or her a massage while they sing and listen to the song “Just the way you are”. Obviously, students like the song because they have sung the song and given a massage to the person next to them. In addition, Miss. Jimenez uses this technique in order to raise rapport by making students feel comfortable and relaxed and motivate students by laughing together.

- To continue, Miss. Jimenez presents the grammar face using a presentation based on The Simpsons characters and their belongings. When presenting Bart Simpson, she shows an image of Bart skating and two sentences in which students have to fill the blank using the corresponding possessive form. For instance, this is Bart´s skate, or this is his skate. After she recalls and explains to students its function, she shows several images more in order to clarify any doubt. During this face, students pay attention, and they have shown it by providing correct answers in the exercises, and by explaining to the professor the usage of possessive adjectives and possessive form of nouns with their own words.

- Later on, Miss. Jimenez begins the practice face by showing a funny picture of a man and introducing him to her students; as an example, she says He is Chepa´s boyfriend. His name is Chepito, and his nationality is Salvadoran. He is 35 years old; his face is ugly, but he is a very good person, and that´s why he is Vanessa´s best friend. After that, she shows another picture of a girl and asks students to help her to describe the girl by giving a name, an age, a nationality, a profession and by describing her appearance and personality. Students contribute enough during this part. Because students understand, Miss. Jimenez goes to the semi-control practice and shows the next pictures in which she lets them describe the pictures in pairs in order to practice English by speaking and listening.

- In the free practice face, students do the same, but this time they have to create a conversation in order to introduce and describe a friend of them. They can write ideas. During the preparation of the conversation, Miss. Jimenez goes around the classroom for monitoring and helping students. When finishing, they stand up and share their work with the class. Students show a positive attitude when doing this activity. Besides, clearly, they include all the aspect seen in the first unit, so they have done a well-done job, and their enthusiasm is remarkable when they get involved in activities like this one. To finish the lesson, Miss. Jimenez passes a diagnostic test in order to know her students´ proficiency level.

- Miss. Jimenez shows a very active and happy personality, so students get involve quickly in every face of her lesson. I could notice perfectly how students get fascinated when hearing jokes which is something extremely good because students´ personalities adapt this nice and enjoyable environment, so they participate a lot, learn significantly, and work well. Another aspect I notice is the way she keeps control and focuses on everyone in the classroom. For me, the methodology she is using is perfect, and I would use it because it transmits confidence to students; also, as they are very smart and active students, it is important to take advantage of their energy and enthusiasm in order to get a significant learning at the end of each class.
